Changelog

Folders that upload themselves

Much of what you share lands in the same few places: the screenshots folder, a design tool's exports, a build's output, Downloads. Aktar 0.11.0 adds Watched Folders: pick a folder and every new file in it is uploaded on its own, about 1.5 to 2 seconds after it's completely written, with that folder's own destination, path and rules. Any file type works, not only images. If you're on 0.3.0 or later, Aktar offers it automatically.

Any folder, its own rules

Add a folder in Settings › Watched Folders, or right-click it in Finder and choose Watch Folder with Aktar. Each folder has its own destination, Object Path, link and Delete after, and decides which files count: all of them, images, videos, screenshots only, or your own patterns, with sizes and subfolders. {folder} and {subpath} keep the folder's structure in the bucket. When a file changes, Aktar can ignore it, upload it again, or replace the upload so the link stays the same. Afterwards the original can stay where it is, go to the Trash, move to an Uploaded subfolder or get an Aktar tag in Finder.

Screenshots, straight to a link

Upload Screenshots Automatically watches the folder macOS saves screenshots to and copies each screenshot's link as soon as it's up. A tip: macOS writes the file only after the floating thumbnail goes away, about 5 seconds later. Turn off Show Floating Thumbnail in the options of the Screenshot app (⇧⌘5) and the link is ready almost at once.

Nothing skipped, nothing twice

Aktar waits for as long as a file is still being written, so a slow export or a big download is never skipped or sent half done. Partial downloads, temporary and hidden files are left out, and a file that gets its real name at the end, like a finished browser download or a file a tool writes under a temporary name first, is uploaded once it has it. A renamed or moved file isn't uploaded twice. Files that arrived while Aktar wasn't running, or while the Mac was asleep or offline, are picked up when it's back, and failed uploads are retried on their own.

Deletions ask first

For folders that keep their files, Delete it from the bucket too (off by default) removes an upload when its file is deleted from the folder. It waits 3 to 4 seconds in case an app saves by deleting and rewriting the file, and never deletes an upload something else still uses. Ask before deleting (on by default) asks every time, in the menu bar and in a notification whose Delete from Bucket and Keep Uploaded Files buttons work without opening Aktar. And when more than 50 new files show up at once, they wait for Upload or Skip, so a folder dropped in by mistake isn't shared.

Part of your workflow

Each watched folder can call a webhook or run a script from Aktar's scripts folder after every upload, with the link, the key and the file: post a build to your team's chat, attach a screenshot to a ticket, or kick off whatever comes next. Watching can pause for an hour, until tomorrow or until you resume it, and on battery power or metered networks if you like. The local API lists, pauses and resumes watched folders too.

All changes in this release

New

  • Watched Folders in Settings: files that land in a folder you pick are uploaded on their own once they're completely written, about 1.5 to 2 seconds after they arrive.
  • Per folder: destination, Object Path, link and Delete after; which files count (all, images, videos, screenshots only, or your own patterns, with sizes and subfolders); what happens when a file changes (ignore it, upload it again, or replace the upload so the link stays); and what happens to the original (keep it, move it to the Trash or an Uploaded subfolder, or tag it Aktar in Finder).
  • Partial downloads, temporary and hidden files are never uploaded, a renamed file isn't uploaded twice, and files that arrived while Aktar wasn't running are picked up when it starts.
  • Upload Screenshots Automatically watches the folder macOS saves screenshots to and copies each screenshot's link as soon as it's up.
  • Delete it from the bucket too (off by default) removes an upload when its file is deleted from the folder. Ask before deleting (on by default) asks first every time; with it off, Aktar still asks when many files disappear at once.
  • More than 50 new files at once wait for Upload or Skip, in the menu bar and in Settings.
  • Pause watching for an hour, until tomorrow or until you resume it, from the menu bar or Settings, and on battery power or Low Data Mode and metered networks if you like. Files that arrive meanwhile wait in their folder.
  • A webhook or a script from Aktar's scripts folder for each watched folder, run after every upload with the link, the key and the file.
  • Watch Folder with Aktar in Finder's right-click menu for folders.
  • {folder} and {subpath} in the Object Path: the watched folder's name and the subfolders a file is in.
  • Uploads from watched folders say where they came from in the menu bar and the Library, which can show only those.
  • The local API lists, pauses and resumes watched folders (/v1/watched-folders), and aktar://watch, aktar://watch/pause and aktar://watch/resume do the same from a link.
