Thumbnails for every file, and videos that play
Until now only photos had thumbnails in Aktar, and everything else was a file icon. Aktar 0.13.0 makes thumbnails the way Finder does, for videos, PDFs, RAW photos, Office and iWork documents and more, and lets each destination decide where they're kept: nowhere, on this Mac, or in your own bucket. If you're on 0.3.0 or later, Aktar offers it automatically.

Thumbnails the way Finder makes them
History, the menu bar and the bucket view now show a real preview for almost any file: a video's frame, a PDF's first page, a RAW photo, a Keynote or Word document. Files that were already in your bucket get one when they're shown, if they're under 25 MB, and a file's details show its thumbnail when there's no other preview. Thumbnails are 512 pixels, so they're sharp, yet a few kilobytes each, and they're kept next to your history, so cleaning caches doesn't lose them.
Off, on this Mac, or in your bucket
Each destination has a Thumbnails setting in Settings › Destinations. On This Mac is the default. In the Bucket also saves them to a folder of your choice in your bucket, so your other devices can show them. A thumbnail there is deleted, renamed, moved and expires together with its file, and its folder is hidden in the bucket view. Off means nothing is made or downloaded. Thumbnails only ever go to your own storage, never to another service.
Videos and audio play in the Library
Select a video or an audio file in History or the bucket view and click Play in its details. It streams from your bucket without being downloaded first, also from a private bucket, and nothing loads until you click Play.
All changes in this release
New
- Thumbnails for videos, PDFs, RAW and HEIC photos, Office and iWork documents, fonts and more in History, the menu bar and the bucket view.
- A Thumbnails setting for each destination: Off, On This Mac or In the Bucket, with a folder of your choice.
- Thumbnails in the bucket are deleted, renamed, moved and expire together with their files, and their folder is hidden in the bucket view and the local API. Leaving that mode asks whether to delete the ones already there.
- Videos and audio files play in a file's details, streamed from the bucket, private buckets too.
- Settings › General shows how much space thumbnails take on this Mac, with Clear… to remove them.
- The local API serves thumbnails, so the Raycast extension can show them too.
Improved
- Thumbnails are sharper (512 pixels instead of 320) and take about a tenth of the space.
- Thumbnails are kept next to your history, so macOS or a cleaner app emptying caches no longer leaves rows with only an icon.
- The Thumbnails setting travels with Share to Another Device.
Fixed
- Screenshots pasted from the clipboard get a thumbnail in History again.
