QR codes, smarter uploads, no size limit

Aktar 0.10.0 brings five upgrades to every app at once: a QR code for any link, the existing link when the same file comes up again, file names from the file's hash or your own words, lighter images, and big uploads that survive a dropped connection. If you're on 0.3.0 or later, Aktar offers it automatically.

A QR code for any link

Right-click an upload in the Library or the menu bar and choose Show QR Code to open the link on a phone without typing it. When the destination uses temporary links, the code holds a fresh one. Copy Image and Save Image put it in a slide or a printout.

Same file, same link

Upload a file that's already in the same destination and Aktar copies its existing link instead of sending it again, after checking it's still in the bucket. It compares the SHA-256 of the contents, so a renamed copy counts too. Turn it off with Reuse links for duplicate files in Settings › General.

Lighter images

Each destination now has Image Processing: convert photos and screenshots to WebP or AVIF, recompress them, and shrink them to a longest side of 1024 to 3840 px. A 4.8 MB iPhone photo can leave as a 600 KB WebP. It's off until you turn it on, and GIFs, SVGs and files inside ZIPs are left as they are.

Big files, no restarts

Files over 64 MB go up in parts, several at a time, so the old 5 GB limit is gone and nothing is read into memory whole. A dropped connection is retried on its own; if it stays down, Retry continues from the last part, and uploading the same file again resumes it, even after quitting Aktar. Cancelling an upload clears what was already sent.

All changes in this release

New

  • Show QR Code for an upload, with Copy Image and Save Image.
  • Reuse links for duplicate files (on by default): the same contents in the same destination copy the existing link instead of uploading again.
  • {md5} and {sha256} in a destination's Object Path, for names that follow the file's contents.
  • Rename before upload: hold ⌥ while dropping or choosing files in the menu bar, or give Rename and upload clipboard its own shortcut. On Windows, hold Alt.
  • Image Processing per destination: WebP or AVIF, Light, Medium or Strong compression, and resizing by the longest side.

Improved

  • Files over 64 MB upload in parts, with no 5 GB limit, real progress, automatic retries and resuming after a failure or a restart.
  • Uploads in progress can be cancelled, which also frees what was already sent to the bucket.
